From the 25th of October, the ultra-low emission zone will be expanding from central London to the boundaries of the North and South Circular roads.

Best Price Car Sales who are based in Southampton has gathered some important information you should be aware of in order to comply with the new laws, so we can all do our bit in combating poor air quality in London and the surrounding areas.

It is estimated that roughly one in five vehicles in the expanded square mile zone will be liable to pay the Ulez levy of £12.50 per day. This will be around 100,000 cars, 3,000 lorries, and 35,000 vans.

Who will have to pay for the Ulez charge?

Any driver of a vehicle that fails to meet Transport for London’s (TfL’s) exhaust emission standards will have to pay the Ulez charge. So, in a nutshell, if you have a Euro 4 petrol engine or a Euro 6 diesel engine, you will be complying with the Ulez criteria. Another way to put it is, a petrol vehicle registered after 2005, and any diesel vehicle registered after 2015, will not have to pay the Ulez levy.

And motorbikes?

For your motorbike to comply with the Ulez rules, you have to have a Euro 3 engine.

To see if your motorbike complies, simply visit the TfL website and just enter your registration number.

Where does the Ulez rule actually apply?

Ulez was launched in the same eight square mile congestion charge zone in central London, in April 2019. Now it’s going to be extended to the inner boundaries of the North and South Circular roads from the 25th of October 2021. Meaning anyone driving a non-compliant vehicle within the zone or across the zonal boundaries will have to pay a levy.

Do charges apply during the week only?

Unfortunately not, the charges will apply 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except Christmas Day. And with the technology available to the City, it will be near to impossible to try and evade being caught and failure to pay the levy will result in a fine of £160 for cars, vans, and motorbikes and a whopping £1,000 fine for lorries and coaches.
