You know the world is about to change when you see an announcement by Rolls Royce to say they are launching a fully electric car and they will be only selling electric cars by their target date of 2030. Meaning the end of petrol and diesel production cars within 9 years. To get a better understanding of how big this news is, it’s regarded in the industry as its biggest gear change for the luxury carmaker in its 117-year history.
The groundbreaking launch of its all-new, all-electric car called the Spectre will change the outlook of the prestigious carmaker. The Spectre will be a zero-emissions electric car scheduled to be in production in 2023. BMW, the parent company of Rolls Royce had previously introduced their first all-electric SUV called the BMW iX.
This news is following the press release of Bentley, which is owned by the German car giant, Volkswagen, that they will be going all-electric by 2025. And Jaguar, which is owned by Tata, has also set a date of going all-electric by 2025 too.
The ultimate road test
The new Rolls Royce Spectre is to undergo one of the most stringent road tests from its Goodwood factory, a 1.5 million mile global road testing programme, which is the equivalent of 400 years of use. When the asking price is around £360,000, you want to be reassured that this innovative electric car will last your lifetime and then some.
This new luxury electric car is predicted to be heralded as one of the most advanced steps taken in the electric car revolution, which will keep Rolls Royce in the highest echelons for super-luxury car manufacturers.
What the CEO is saying about the Spectre
Rolls Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös quoted as saying “The decision to abandon the internal combustion engine closes the chapter on more than a century of engineering and heralds the dawn of another, cleaner, era”. “This is not a prototype, it’s the real thing,” Müller-Ötvös said.
