How to Tax your car online, by phone or at the post office!

Taxing Your Car Online
To tax your vehicle online go to www.gov.uk/tax-disc you’ll need one of the following:

1. 16 digit reference number on your vehicle tax renewal letter (V11)

2. 11 digit reference number on your log book (V5C)

3. Or, if you’ve just bought the vehicle , the 12 digit reference number on your new keeper supplement (V5C/2)

If your vehicle is quite old, it may have a reference number of less than 12 digits, in which case you should contact the DVLA via the link below:

https://www.gov.uk/contact-the-dvla

Taxing Your Car By Phone
Taxing a vehicle by phone is slightly different. It’s an automated 24/7 service that the DVLA says should only take three to four minutes – but you can’t pay by Direct Debit via the phone service. You’ll need to enter the same information that you would when applying for tax online i.e. reference number on either the V5C or the V11 and pay via your credit/ debit card. The number is 0300 123 4321 textphone (0300 790 6201) – calls are charged at the local rate.

Taxing Your Car at the Post Office
You can still tax your vehicle at the Post Office – make sure you check before you go, not all of them still tax vehicles. You’ll need to take:

1. your completed V11 reminder, V5C or new keeper supplement (V5C/2)

2. your MOT test certificate if required (must be valid when the tax starts)

3. the payment shown on the reminder

In Northern Ireland you’ll also need an insurance certificate or cover note.

Best Price Car Sale – Southampton
Southampton : 5 Facts You May Not Know About Our Great City What can we say about our great city? It has a population of around a quarter of a million people, it is popular with tourists to the UK and its port is the start of many journeys for people cruising all around the world.

We love our city and we are proud to be a part of community serving the residents of Southampton since 1981 with our professional lettings and property management service.

So, here are some facts that you may know or (hopefully) may not know. If you do share these with your friends and family, please do not hesitate to let them know where you heard them.

Let’s get started… 1. A Dinner Time Favourite

Did you know that Southampton claim to fame is that it was pivotal in the success of fish fingers? The dinner time favourite was known as ‘cod sticks’ but when their popularity rose, news spread and so did the sale of fish fingers across the UK.

It was Clarence Birdseye who started this craze with Herring and Cod Sticks amongst the shoppers in Southampton .

2. Funny Man Benny Hill Was Born in Southampton

This popular comic was a big hit on the television screens between 1955 and 1991 entertaining people all around the world with his funny sketches and scenes that are still shown today on our screens. Famously, Benny Hill’s sketches always finished with a chase scene with himself and many females.

Many people do not know that his idol was in fact Charlie Chaplin and he visited his home shortly after his death in Switzerland.

Benny Hill later died in 1977, leaving a hole in British TV comedy and will be much remembered by the generations who proceeded him.

Other famous people who were born in Southampton include, singers Craig David and Howard Jones.

3. The Unthinkable Happened To The Unsinkable

On the 10th April 1912, the supposedly ‘unsinkable’ ocean liner set sail from the port of Southampton carrying 3,327 passengers and crew destination; New York. However, only 4 days into its historic journey, it collided with an iceberg and within just two hours forty minutes later, it sank leaving the world devasted with such a loss of life. With only 20 lifeboats on board, over 1,500 people lost their life.

The infamous journey lasted only a few short days but was hailed as a great in the engineering world. There are many factors that could have saved many more people when the cruise liner was sinking. Was it human error? Should they have had more life boats on board or were the shop owners over confident about its sheer prowess.

An interesting fact (that wasn’t divulged in the 1998 Oscar winning film, was that Southampton was not the last stop on this maiden voyage. The White Star cruise liner also stopped in Cherbourg (France) and Cobh (County Cork).

4. Southampton Has A European Twin

Not many people know that our great city is twinned with Le Havre, which is in the Northern Normandy region of France. There are five ways to travel from Southampton to Le Havre. These include by train, bus, bus and ferry, car, car ferry, car train or by plane.

The two cities are now celebrating a forty six year partnership and with EU funding over the years, the popularity rose for finding twinned cities across Europe.

One of the strengths of cities being twinned is that each city will engagement with its twin to ensure that a relationship continues for many generations. This responsibility falls to the residents of both cities and various organisations get together each year to celebrate this.

Southampton is also twinned with other cities across Europe which include Bremen (Germany), Bilbao (Spain), Cherbourg (also in France), Patras (Greece) and finally the Italian city of Trieste.

Interesting to note, Southampton also has a sister city and another port in Qingdao in China.

5. Sense & Sensibility Was Written In Southampton

This novel was originally published anonymously in 1811 by ‘A Lady’ which appears at the top of the book where the author’s name would normally have featured. However, it was written by Jane Austin, who briefly lived in Southampton whilst writing this well known book.

Its original print run of 750 copies sold out in 1813 which marked great success for the author. The novel continued to be republished in the 19th, 20th and 21st century and later adapted for stage and film.

For some Sotonians, these facts may not be too ‘amazing’ for them but for those who were not aware, we hope you have enjoyed them as much as we did in finding them for this blog.

Chequered Flag Lowered One Last Time

After a long illness, Sir Stirling Moss winner of 212 of his 529 races, passed away on the 12th of April 2020 aged 90. Moss, widely regarded as the best driver never to win the World Championship, took 2nd spot four times between 1955 and 1961 and third place three times during that period.

The Real Fast and Furious
Moss competed during an era when health and safety hadn’t taken over and races were fast and furious with racing drivers running and jumping into their cars to start races which were known as mobile death traps.

Drivers didn’t wear crash helmets, buckle up seat belts, and they wore t-shirts. Moss joked that he liked to get a tan when he raced. But on a more serious note, there were many accidents with three to four drivers losing their lives each year along with a few spectators.

Eighty-Five Different Cars
During his career, Moss drove competitively in eighty-five different cars across all different forms of motor racing. These included 500 cc single-seaters, formula one cars, and rally cars. He drove new cars, used cars, and most famously he swapped cars with teammate Tony Brooks during the July 1957 British Grand Prix at Aintree.

Linking Up With Mercedes
As a proud Englishman Moss wanted nothing more than to drive British built cars to victory but in the early fifties the Italians and their red Ferrari cars were very much the ones to beat.

Moss became more competitive when his father, with his son’s money but without his knowledge, started to look at foreign used cars in the market and turned up one day with an Italian Maserati.

Moss’s form improved and in 1955 German giants Mercedes took notice and signed Moss to form their dream team with Argentina’s Juan Manuel Fangio to challenge the Italian’s.

Le Mans 24 Hour Race Disaster
In June 1955 a major accident occurred during the 24 Hour Race when eighty-three spectators lost their lives along with French driver Pierre Bouillin. This promoted Mercedes to pull out of motor racing until the late eighties.

Making British Racing History

Around eighteen months later, driving a British built Vanwall car, Moss had a decent lead but pulled into the pits with a problem. Brooks, still suffering from an injury picked up during a previous race, soon pulled up in front of Moss and as the pit crew pulled Brooks out Moss jumped into the driving seat.

This delay put Moss back in thirteenth place but he managed to regain the lead to take the chequered flag. This made British Motor Racing history with a British driver, winning the British Grand Prix, in a British built car for the first time. Brooks takes credit as well as in racing terms Moss won the race in an already used car.

Enzo Ferrari Wanted Moss
At the beginning of the sixties, Ferrari boss Enzo Ferrari wanted Moss and he promised to build a car especially for him. Moss, in a Ferrari, looked like the perfect combination and the title would soon be his.

Goodwood 24th April 1962
Before the perfect car reached the UK Moss’s career had come to an abrupt end when he crashed at Goodwood on the 24th of April 1962.

There were fears that Moss wouldn’t make it but after thirty-eight days in a coma, he regained consciousness. A year later, when he tried to begin a return to racing, he soon realised that he didn’t have it in him anymore.

Who Do You Think You Are Stirling Moss
Moss went on to become a fine ambassador for Great Britain, British racing, and police, trapping speeding motorists, would often say to drivers ‘ who do you think you are Stirling Moss?’

These days Moss has probably been replaced by Lewis Hamilton but Moss himself fell victim when speeding through the Mersey tunnel. When asked if he thought he was Stirling Moss he replied yes but he was still fined £10.
